It has been a fairly wild week for our favorite late-60s psych-folk-roots rocker Rodriguez. He started off on Wednesday by playing his first New York City show ever at the intimate Joe’s Pub. And now, two days later this rediscovered legend will be interviewed by the good folk over New York’s finest public radio station WNYC. In the words of the WNYC:
“We find out what ever happened to Sixto Diaz Rodriguez, when he joins us to talk about his soul relic, “Cold Fact.”
The interview airs at 11:15 PST. GIVE IT A LISTEN!
You non-New York-natives shant worry about the inability to catch this sure to be fascinating interview on your broken-down jukebox, due to the power of the world-wide superhighway (i.e.; internet) you have the ability to listen to it on your computer right HERE.
Our good friend and reporter-on-the-scene Heather Wizell sent us over this final little batch of Bumbershoot shots of The Saturday Knights and some of them are just so great we couldn’t help but dip back in to the Bumbershoot flashbacks to post some.
It was only weeks ago that late-60s psych-folk-soul-singer-songwriter Rodriguez played his very first US show. As incredible as that is, it could be even more mind-blowing that tonight, September 3rd, one Sixto Rodriguez will play his very first New York City show … EVER. Yes, after nearly 30 years of obscurity, Rodriguez is playing for the first time in the grit and grime of New York at the very intimate 150-seat setting of Joe’s Pub. Tickets are extremely limited, so if you’re interested whatsoever in attending this historic, absolutely breath-taking performance, purchase your tickets now, RIGHT HERE.
For those of you who don’t know, Light In The Attic released Rodriguez’s amazing 1970 album, Cold Fact. It’s been getting amazing press from the likes of Pitchfork, Aquarium Drunkard, MOJO, UNCUT, Spin, and many, many more.
Well, we’d love for you to get even more acquainted with this brilliant, recently unearthed treasure, and our good friends at NPR took the time to put together an amazing seven-minute feature about Rodriguez. It’s beautifully put together, and you can check it out RIGHT HERE!
We’ll officially bumbered the shit out of ourselves this weekend and our now painfully attempting to put our boxed-wine shattered lives back together (thank you Bandit, The Most Wanted Wine in The West). Thus, we’re taking it easy and culling together a selection of photos from The Blakes packed performance at The Exhibition Hall and The Saturday Knights energy-laced twilight bash on the Fisher Green Stage.
We hope you all had a chance to get on out there and see some great music, we certainly did.

Oh man, can you feel the excitement you lucky residents of Seattle? Can you feel the magnetic waves of energy subtly drawing you towards the Seattle Center? Can you feel the sweat, dirt, grit, hipster oil already settling on your skin?
You should, ’cause it’s BUMBERSHOOT TIME!
There are a ton, a ton of good bands playing this year (Howlin’ Rain, Beck, Man Man, Battles, etc.) but we of course wanted to draw your attention towards our own bands and their respective rocking-it times. We know, oh how we know, there are plenty of enticing conflicts to draw you away from The Blakes and The Saturday Knights jaw-dropping sets, but c’mon be the best little supporters of your favorite record label ever and just skip out on the rest of it and attend. Co-owner Matt Sullivan will personally imprint your cheek with a lipstick kiss if you do (ed. total, absolute lie).
Here’s those times:
SUNDAY AUGUST 31st
The Blakes on The Exhibition Hall Stage (across from Teatro Zinzanni) — 3:15
The Saturday Knights on The Fisher Green Stage (near the fountain) — 7:45
Oh goodness, our collective toes are tingling, just thinking about it.

We’re big fans of Fleet Foxes around the Light In The Attic office. And as we were having our morning “lets search around the internet while hungover” meeting, we collectively stumbled upon this amazing video of two early-teen Swedes (they go by the name First Aid Kit) covering the Foxes “Tiger Mountain Peasant Song”. It’s kind of adorable, a little bit creepy, but in the end, fairly heart-warming. HAPPY FRIDAY!
Rodriguez, creator of the amazing brand-new Light In The Attic reissue Cold Fact will be featured in a seven-minute piece on NPR’s All Things Considered this very evening. The much-lauded, extremely awesome radio station will discussing Rodriguez’s fascinating history, and the amazing story of Cold Fact.
It’s going to be a damn solid listen, and we beg of you, please tune in.
For those discerning listeners in Seattle, the spot already aired once today on 88.5, but is currently airing RIGHT NOW on 94.9!
There are certain things in Sea-town you just don’t fuck with: Sub Pop, The Space Needle, Dicks Hamburgers, Nancy Guppy, Tilson’s scarves, the fine proprietors of the Motel Italia - the list goes on and on. But, as the nation as slowly learned over the course of the last five years, one of our great local treasures is independent radio behemoth, KEXP. They’ve spread their considerable wings this year, joining up with a New York radio conglomerate to continue to their bombardment of the best music on the airwaves.
And what can we say, they certainly seem to enjoy Light In The Attic, as the amazing new reissue by Rodriguez, Cold Fact, has jumped to number 34 on their national charts. Maybe 34 doesn’t seem that high to you negative nancies, and glass-half-full types, but look who’s ruling the roost above us: David Letterman-appearing Fleet Foxes, The Moondoggies, Danger Mouse-assisted Beck - seriously, look at that list! We couldn’t be happier that our recently rediscovered hero of late-60s-folk-psych-rock Rodriguez edged his way in to the top 50.
We were all set to remind you, our favorite readers, about the fact that our favorite hard-rocking, booze-soaked trio, The Blakes, will be performing in Seattle for the first time, well, in a while at Bumbershoot this weekend, and then just leave it at that.
But, we got some good news, hipster-hop queen Kid Sister was forced to drop out of the concert for unknown reasons and old Bumbershoot had to fill the spot … WITH THE SATURDAY KNIGHTS! Oh yeah!
Thus, now you have not one (The Blakes) but TWO (The Saturday Knights) reasons to get off of your Cheetos stained Futon and head on down to The Seattle Center this weekend. It might be expensive, but so is your monthly Gold Membership on World of Warcraft. Make some sacrifices, GET ON DOWN TO THE BUMBERSHOOT!
All the details about stages and times and such and such after the BREAK!
Drew Christie is a good, good friend of Light In The Attics. He’s done a load of animations for a variety of our short-lived columns, as well as much much much more. Well, Drew is still pumping out non-Light In The Attic related animations and we just wanted to draw your attention to some of the newest high quality art he’s putting out.
