The Free Design Kites Are Fun Heaven/Earth Light In The Attic With 1967's elegant soft-pop classic "Kites Are Fun," New York City's The Free Design unwittingly sparked an entire cultural movement whose reverberations are heartily felt today. Fans from Beck to Peter Yarrow (Peter, Paul & Mary) have professed sincere affection for key songwriter/arranger Chris Dedrick's subtle yet complex work. Beginning in 1966, Dedrick and his three siblings began performing their original material in coffeehouses and folk clubs around Manhattan, where they landed a deal with Enoch Light's audiophile label Project 3. Already a tigh-knit troupe, the Dedrick's cut their now legendary LP Kites Are Fun within one week's time, and while the public was slow to catch on, pockets of studious pop fans soon began to take notice. Now 38 years later, The Free Design has fans worldwide, among them Japan's Cornelius and Scotland's Belle & Sebastian. These releases are must-haves. - Josh Gabriel
