Big Take Over V/A Wheedle's Groove: Seattle's Finest in Funk & Soul, 1965-75 Light In The Attic Any decent rock writer laughs when someone says, "Wow, you know so much about music." When in fact, we're perpetually reminded of how little we know that we could, and are fascinated by "discovering" great stuff, same as you. It's never-ending. Case in point, this fabulous, ultra-groovy 21-song, 15-artist compendium of just one city's hot funk and soul scene I knew nothing of (and in the case of the sprightly Oscar Peterson meets Vince Guaraldi 1970 take on The Beatles' "Hey Jude, " inspired jazz, too!). Talk about schooling; there's so much different stuff here! The Sly & Family Stone licks of Robbie Hill's Family Affair; the James Brown sweat of Ron Buford; the Wilson Pickett sexy-soul stomp of Black on White Affair; the sassy Gladys Knight attitude of Soul Swingers; the trumpet blaring Curtis Mayfield/Isaac Hayes strut of Cookin' Bag; the funky-Temptations/Isley Bros.-fire of Cold, Bold & Together, etc. The sound is always steamy, the playing damn sharp, the songs and singing first rate. I've always loved Seattle's noteworthy garage and punk history, and you can only call this "outta sight," too. Class dismissed. More homework assigned.
