MOJO V/A Wheedle's Groove: Seattle's Finest in Funk & Soul, 1965-75 Light In The Attic "4 STARS" In the past two years, reissue labels have zigzagged across the States, targeting what George Clinton dubbed "chocolate cities" - conurbations with a heavy black presence. New Orleans, the Bay Area and Miami have all been hit, their groovy local scenes immaculately documented. Now it's time for an Emerald City expose, a metropolis that evidently bustled against a healthy soul and funk backdrop. Wheedle's Groove doesn't claim to be a definitive collection. In fact, it champions the underdog - bands that didn't quite make it, but still cut a clutch of classic, now dusty, 45s. The setlist is diverse, encompassing tough funk, Hammond-boogaloo groovers, sassy female soul and three tracks from Seattle's contemporary funk artists. With sleevenotes written by a former '70s Seattle soul radio jock, it's an excellent glimpse into the funky Pacific Northwest. - James Maycock
