Record Collector V/A Wheedle's Groove: Seattle's Finest in Funk & Soul, 1965-75 Light In The Attic "4 STARS" This is just the sort of compilation that makes CDs so worthwhile: Seattle's Light In the Attic label continue their eclectic lists with a major work of sonic archaeology with this fine issue of twenty-one rarities. Varying from high octane funk bands to jazzy trios, this exceptionally well-annotated issue could well introduce a whole new collecting are to fans. From Ron Buford's driving Deep Soul, through Black On White Affair's three tracks, to The Topics' fine take on Louie Louie, this never fails to interest and please. The Soul Swingers' Brighter Tomorrow is led with a very fine vocal from Earnestine Wilkins, and Robbie Hill's Family Affair enjoyed a local No 1 with their convincing contribution I Just Want To Be (Like Myself). With the music fusing jazz, soul and funk, this is very much a city based collection, and the variety and quality, plus the bonus of three contemporary but historically influenced tracks, make this a most desirable target for many collectors. - Kingsley Abbott
