Chart Attack - May 2004 Back to Wayne McGhie

This is definitely the best part of being a music critic - when someone digs up a forgotten record from some overly-mined genre that you thought had been blown dusty and dry. Wayne McGhie was a Jamaican who came to Canada in the late '60s and recorded this one funky soul reggae disc (that never even had a chance back in the day since the record plant with most of the pressed copies burnt to the ground). While it certainly isn't the greatest soul record ever, it does have some amazing gems, including McGhie originals like "When I Think Of Home" and "Cool It." Crate diggin' DJs will love the instro "Dirty Funk." And if there are any sports arenas out there that are tired of Steam's "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye," McGhie's version would be a welcome funky alternative. Maybe not a classic, but an important document on the early days of soul and funk in Canada. - Dan "The Mouth" Lovranski
